Yifei Gong’s research-based practice encompasses film, installation, photography, performance and publication. Her work investigates the temporality of individual and collective identities in relation to the environment they are formed and performed within. By examining the way spaces are constructed through social convention, architecture and technology, she explores self-presentation and otherness in relation to consumerism. In her practice, the labour behind cultural production and commodity production is treated as a process of identity formation. Extracting the absurdity imbedded in the everyday, she creates situations with images and objects that wander between fiction and reality. Her practice brings together original footage and archival footage alongside hi-tech digital imagery to investigate the politics around contemporary image making.
